Norwood, a leading supplier and service provider of agricultural and construction machinery in New Zealand, has established a successful apprenticeship programme that addresses skill shortages in equipment servicing while fostering a diverse and supportive learning environment.

A Structured, Cohort-Based Approach

Since 2020, Norwood has transitioned from an informal, ad hoc apprentice intake to a centralised, annual cohort system. This change enables apprentices to start together, progress as a group, and benefit from peer support, creating a more engaging and cohesive learning experience. The programme is overseen by a dedicated Apprentice Programme Manager who regularly visits apprentices, sets goals, and maintains ongoing communication to keep learners on track and motivated.

Comprehensive Training and Mentorship

Apprentices typically undergo up to 48 months of training, working towards nationally recognised qualifications such as the New Zealand Certificate in Heavy Automotive Engineering – Agricultural Equipment (Levels 3 and 4). The programme combines on-the-job training with formal technical instruction, supported by carefully selected mentors who provide personalised guidance tailored to each apprentice’s skills and experience. This mentorship also nurtures leadership development within Norwood’s workforce.

In 2021, Norwood further enhanced training through the opening of a National Training Centre in Palmerston North, equipped with the latest tools and technical resources to accelerate apprentices’ productivity and confidence.

Transparent Assessment and Support

The programme uses technology to document apprentices’ daily tasks, allowing supervisors to verify work and the Apprentice Programme Manager to assess progress collaboratively. This transparent system ensures apprentices develop the right skills while maintaining clear communication between apprentices, mentors, and supervisors.

Apprentices receive competitive wages with incremental increases linked to training achievements, a tool advance, company-branded uniforms, personal protective equipment, and access to free medical insurance.

Commitment to Diversity and Career Pathways

Norwood’s apprenticeship programme welcomes candidates of all ages, including school leavers and mature learners seeking career changes. The company actively encourages female, Māori, and Pasifika apprentices, promoting an inclusive culture that values diverse backgrounds.

Apprentices have varied career pathways within dealerships or national support roles, supported by further qualifications in automotive engineering, outdoor power equipment, business management, and leadership.
